Air Up: Revolutionizing Flavor with the Power of Neuroscience

Air Up Compatible Flavor Pods

Air Up emerged as a brainchild of Lena Jüngst and Tim Jäger, a pair of innovative German university students who, during their academic pursuits, delved into the pages of Neurogastronomy: How the Brain Creates Flavor and Why It's of Great Importance, a book authored by neuroscientist Gordon M. Shepherd. This paradigm-shifting book challenges established beliefs by highlighting the pivotal role of the sense of smell in the perception of flavor. Empowered by Shepherd's insights, Jüngst and Jäger embarked on a mission to bring their inaugural Air Up prototype to fruition, guided by the mission of "Bridging Neuroscience and Innovative Design." Their overarching objective? To contribute to global well-being by addressing the issue of inadequate hydration, often synonymous with poor nutrition. This cutting-edge water bottle is designed to accommodate 15 unique Air Up flavor pods and is available in two variants—plastic and stainless steel—both of which can be tailored with an array of colorful accessories.

How Air Up works

Experience the unique connection between scent and taste with Air Up's groundbreaking approach. Air Up highlights the role of olfactory receptors, capable of identifying an impressive 1 trillion scents. The brand explains:

"Retronasal smelling is the bridge that makes Air Up exceptional. It's how we introduce 'flavored' air from our pods into plain water. Our bottles ensure that every sip is a sensory journey, as your nasal receptors interpret 'flavored' air as taste. Surprisingly, your water remains true to its original flavor, while your palate explores new dimensions through your sense of smell."

With Air Up, you'll discover the remarkable synergy between scent and taste.

Experience a symphony of scent and taste with Air Up following these instructions. Start by filling your water bottle to the capacity line and connecting the mouthpiece with the straw. Position the circular pod over the mouthpiece, verifying activation. When you sip, enjoy the harmonious journey of scented air bubbles through the straw, transforming into taste sensations.

How we tested Air Up

At the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, we take water bottles seriously. Over the years, we've rigorously assessed countless options for performance, durability, and ease of use. But when the Air Up water bottle entered our testing lineup, it was clear that this was no ordinary examination.

Our 11-person testing panel, featuring consumers, dietitians, kitchen equipment experts, engineers, and chemists, embarked on a thorough evaluation journey. The result? A wealth of data, comprising over a hundred data points and invaluable feedback. This feedback ranged from taste assessments to comfort during usage and observations on shifts in hydration habits.

Inside our Lab, no detail was overlooked. We conducted drop and leak tests on both plastic and stainless steel Air Up models. We meticulously scrutinized nine distinct flavor pods, rating them for flavor quality, longevity, and strength. Additionally, we assessed the water bottle's user-friendliness, covering aspects like filling, carrying, drinking, and cleaning.

What is in the flavor pods?

Air Up takes pride in using natural flavors extracted from plants, fruits, and spices to create their flavor pods. While they keep specific details related to their intellectual property a closely guarded secret, their commitment to natural ingredients is unwavering.

With 15 flavors available on their website, ranging from apple to basil-lemon to orange-vanilla, Air Up offers a diverse selection. You can either explore a variety of scents through packs or stock up on your favorite with three-packs. Additionally, each water bottle starter set includes a curated assortment of flavor pods.

During our testing, personal preferences influenced the results, with no single scent receiving unanimous praise. Testers shared their experiences, noting variations in scent strength and flavor profiles.

How long do Air Up pods last?

Air Up asserts that each of its pods can enhance approximately 1.3 gallons of water with delightful scents. Furthermore, the company recommends checking the "best before" date on each pod, as the scent's intensity may diminish over time, delivering the most satisfying experience when the pod is freshly opened. Keeping the pods in their original packaging is essential, as they cannot be cleaned and should only be unsealed just before attaching them to your water bottle.

In our investigations, we noted that if the pods remained affixed to the water bottle for an extended duration without being used, the fragrance gradually faded, resulting in a milder "flavor" for the water. Given the per-pod price and the current online-exclusive availability, our experts expressed a desire for pods with a more prolonged lifespan.

Does the Air Up water bottle work?

Do Air Up water bottles deliver on their promise? In our extensive testing, we found that they indeed transform the taste of water into the flavors of their pods. One standout was the mango-passionfruit pod, which delivered a juicy burst of "flavor." However, opinions on the orange-vanilla pod were mixed, with some finding it tasted artificial.

As we dove into the data and tester feedback, it became clear that individual preferences played a significant role in the experience. People perceive scents differently, influenced by personal associations and variations in their sense of smell. Some testers didn't feel compelled to reach for the Air Up water bottle after testing, while others considered it an innovative addition to their hydration routine.

One tester shared, "Inhaling the scent didn't enhance the flavor for me," while another noted, "It's not a gimmick. On days when I struggle to drink plain water at home, the Air Up bottle makes it more enjoyable." Ultimately, your experience with Air Up depends on how you perceive and enjoy scents.

Additional Lab and tester notes

In our comprehensive evaluation of Air Up water bottles, we've closely examined their durability, weight, and comfort features. We've provided insights into the lightweight plastic version and compared it to the substantial stainless steel alternative in terms of weight.

Through meticulous drop testing, we've assessed how well both materials can withstand multiple falls onto hard concrete surfaces, revealing their strengths and potential vulnerabilities. These real-world tests offer valuable insights into their overall durability.

Our leak testing procedures aimed to determine the bottles' ability to remain leak-free when placed horizontally with tightly secured lids. Discover the variations in leak resistance between the plastic and stainless steel models.

Additionally, we explored the comfort aspect of the Air Up water bottle, particularly focusing on the mouthpiece and ease of sipping. Cleaning and maintenance considerations, including the advantages of the stainless steel model, are also addressed

So, is the Air Up water bottle worth it?

The Air Up water bottle begs the question: is it a worthwhile addition to your daily routine? This distinctive bottle caters to those who appreciate the taste of flavored water and find it easier to meet their hydration goals with a hint of flavor.

Stefani Sassos, M.S., R.D.N., C.S.O., C.D.N., NASM-CPT, the Nutrition Lab Director at the Good Housekeeping Institute, suggests, "Individuals who struggle with staying adequately hydrated may find this bottle beneficial, particularly those who consider plain water uninteresting." If you lead a busy life and lack the time to infuse your water with fresh ingredients, Air Up could be the solution you've been looking for.

However, it's essential to consider that the Air Up water bottle may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who consume substantial amounts of water and require a larger bottle capacity (the plastic version holds 22 ounces, while the stainless steel version holds 28 ounces). As one tester remarked, "I wish it came in different sizes to reduce the need for frequent refills."

Budget considerations also come into play, as regularly purchasing flavor pods can affect your finances. A three-pack of pods, which flavors approximately 3.9 gallons of water, may be a recurring expense. Nevertheless, with seven out of 11 testers recommending Air Up, it seems to have won over the majority.
